Using the Thesaurus

The English-language Thesaurus lets you easily look up lists of synonyms, antonyms and related words for any word in a message. This features is not available if you are running Windows 98.  
 
To look up a word in a document:  

1.Right-click the mouse in the word you want the Thesaurus to look up.  
 
2.From the right-mouse menu, choose ABCSpell Thesaurus.  
 
3.The Thesaurus window opens and displays the following information:  

Looked Up The word which the Thesaurus looked up. If the Thesaurus can't find any synonyms for the word, this field will be titled "Not Found".  
 
Meanings A list of definitions for the Looked Up word, with the first one selected. The selected meaning determines which words are listed as synonyms. The word's part of speech is shown in parentheses. If no meaning was found for the looked up word, Meanings shows a list of words similar in spelling.  
 
Replace with  
SynonymsA list of synonyms for the looked up word, with the first one selected and displayed above the list.  
 
 
To choose a different Meaning for the word:  
 
1.Choose another meaning from the list by double-clicking on it.  
 
2.The Replace with Synonyms list changes to show the new synonyms for the meaning you selected.  
 
 
To view Antonyms or Related Words:  
 
If the Thesaurus finds antonyms or related words, it displays the words Antonyms or Related Words at the end of the list of Meanings.  
 
1. Select Antonyms or Related Words by clicking on your choice.  
 
2.The Replace with Synonyms list changes to show the appropriate list.  
 
 
To replace a word with a synonym:  
 
If the replacement word you want is highlighted in the Replace with Synonyms list, then click the Replace button. The word in the document will be replaced by the new word. Otherwise:  
 
1.Choose another word from the list by clicking the mouse once on the word you want to use . Do not double-click on the word.  
 
2.With the new word highlighted, click the Replace button. The word in the message will be replaced by the new word.  
 

To look up synonyms for any word shown in the Meanings or Replace with Synonyms lists:  

1.Double-click the word, or click on it once and then click the Look Up button.  
 
2.The new word replaces the current looked up word and the Thesaurus returns a new list of Meanings and Synonyms.  
 
 
To return to a previous look up (current session only):  
 
1.Click the Previous button.  
 
2.The Thesaurus goes backward one step to the previous look-up. You can repeat this process, stepping back through each look up that was done in the current session.  
 
3.You can also go backward by clicking the arrow to the right of the Looked Up field. This opens a history list of words the Thesaurus has looked up in the current session.
